The San Rafael Swell is one of Utah’s best‑kept secrets. In this week’s episode of KSL Outdoors, we take you into the rugged heart of the Swell to tackle one of its most notorious routes: Devil’s Racetrack. But to increase the challenge, we attempt the this technical ride in the snow.
Joining us for this winter challenge is the Steadman Family from Steadman’s Recreation, bringing along a fleet of Polaris and CFMoto machines built to handle extreme terrain. With slick rock ledges covered in ice, off‑camber climbs blanketed in snow, and hidden drop‑offs waiting around every corner, this test of man and machine reveals quickly whether our rigs are truly up to the task.
Our basecamp for the adventure is Big Mountain Lodge in Ferron, an ideal headquarters for anyone exploring the San Rafael Swell. With cozy cabins, on‑site dining, laundry facilities, fuel, and supplies, it offers everything riders need before heading into Utah’s desert backcountry.
Throughout the episode, we also explore iconic landmarks scattered across the Swell, including Swasey’s Cabin, Eagle Arch, Dutchman Arch, historic pictographs and petroglyphs (like the renowned Buckskin Gulch pane) plus The Wedge Overlook, also known as the “Little Grand Canyon,” and the historic Spirit Railroad Complex. Each stop reveals another layer of the Swell’s beauty, history, and diverse recreational opportunities.
If this landscape were anywhere else in America, it would likely be a national park. Instead, it remains a vast and lesser‑known playground for off‑roaders, hikers, history lovers, and anyone seeking solitude in Utah’s open spaces.
