SALT LAKE CITY — This photo gallery features pictures from a land-sailing excursion near the Bonneville Speedway. The Bonneville Salt Flats have hosted plenty of speedy vehicles over the past century, and these sailed cars that zip across the terrain on windy days sure bring excitement. They are lightweight contraptions that have more in common with boats than cars, and can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour.
Most land sailing vehicles have three wheels, though four-wheeled wind wagons are gaining in popularity thanks to a YouTube video released last year featuring the Astrakan, which the video’s description claims is the world’s largest land sailing vessel. Designed and built in Sweden, the massive Astrakan (it has a crew of six) was tested in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and reached high speeds.
