Wayne hunted the public marshes of the Great Salt Lake for swans seeing a lot of high flying birds, unable to knock anything down. An invite by a friend on some private property near the Salt Lake Airport, presented him with some great shot opportunities. When he got to his downed bird, he noticed that it had an unusually large yellow patch on its bill. Checking with his taxidermist, Wayne discovered he had shot a Bewicks Swan, a European cousin of the Tundra Swan, a rare find in Utah.

Beautiful sunset after a great afternoon of hunting!
After unsuccessfully applying for bison tags in Utah for over a decade and at 75 years of age I realized that my hunting days are numbered. I booked a South Dakota bison hunt in October of 2022 for Dec 2023. The morning of the hunt the ranch was blanketed in fog and at times you could see 300 yards in on direction nothing in any other direction. The it would build in and zero visibility every direction. We spent the morning glassing afraid to move too much so as not to bump them. Finally my guide spotted a bull on the move and we circled to be able to be in front of him or cut him off. The guide again picked him up moving from our right to left and told me to set up on my sticks and when I was ready he would stop him. I only had a gray silhouette from the stomach to the hump to aim at. At 100 yards i said I was ready, the guide stopped the bull, I shot and the bull charged us bellowing deep and loud. He did a U hook turn and disappeared from my scope. The guide did not have eyes on hi either. The guide told me to stay on my sticks and he moved a few yards closer to the bull. He returned to me took my sticks and moved me forward and told me to shoot him again as he was down and not moving I questioned this request but he convinced me to shoot again. The bull is 2K LB.I will continue to apply for UT. hunting tags but as I hunt alone now I have to be selective about where I hunt. It is really not about the harvest anymore but is important I be out there while I still can.
