Hi, I’m Dan Smith from Fish Tech Outfitters. I get this question all the time: what size of hook do I use for what bait?

Well, a good way to figure it out, is you take the bait, and then you get a hook, and you need to match the hook up to the bait. The one thing you want to do is make sure when you set the hook that there’s enough gap that will hook the fish.

The second thing you want to look at is the length of the hook compared to the bait. You don’t want that bait to go past the hook, and you don’t want to hook to go past the bait. In other words, you want it to go in the front, and come out before the tail on a grub. Now on a crank bait, you have different size hooks on crank baits. This little small crank bait is not going to take a hook as big as this bigger crank bait.

Now you can change the front hook and put a size bigger hook on the front of the crank bait, and it won’t change the action. But don’t put two sizes bigger because the crank bait won’t run the proper way.

Now if you have any problems on figuring out what hook to put on what bait, come on down to Fish Tech and we’ll help you out.
