I was lucky to draw a Utah bear permit and harvested a beautiful bear this spring but to top it off with a giant fall black bear in Idaho is unreal. He measures 6 feet from nose to tail and would have stood over 7 feet tall if on his hind legs. Being this close to such an incredible animal is nothing I’ve experience. This year I was not only able to hunt and take my first black bear but ended up with the opportunity to harvest 2 of these incredible animals.

After applying in the utah big game draws Brooke was way excited to find out that she drew a youth elk tag. Little did she know how busy her life would be with school, dance, drill team, and the family farm. She only had a few days to hunt, but her and her Dad Brandon were able to find this 5×5 bull elk and she put the hammer on him.

I drew a buck antelope tag in Utah’s southwest desert this year. I asked my grandson(Daxton Laughter) who is 15 and could harvest the buck through the UDWR mentoring program, if he would like to harvest it. Of course, he said yes, so I signed up. It was a bit trying out on the desert with what seemed like a low density of bucks. We finally came across this one and he was able to get a good shot off, hitting it perfectly. He (Daxton), his dad, and I were able to spend 2 nights on the desert in tents – which was an unforgettable weekend. Last year we went through the mentoring program to get him his first deer. We both harvested a turkey in December, on the same day. I’m super proud of him and hope we can be chosen for the snapshot of the week.

My son really wanted to get a deer while we were all there, grandparents, kids, dog and all. He was pretty tickled how it all turned out when his wife was able to harvest this beautiful buck the night we were all on all the mountain together. It’s a spot my dad and uncle hunted as young men. Just a place we really love. Baby Beau was first to take a picture with mom and boy did he cheese it up. We are grateful for these moments on the mountain together.
