First ever bull elk! I was lucky enough to draw a mt dutton muzzleoader bull elk tag for this fall and man being short it sure was a blast! On Monday morning I headed into an area I’ve been hearing elk screaming for 2 days straight. I heard lots of bugles but couldn’t ever put eyes on anything but a smaller bull before legal shooting light so monday afternoon I packed up early and headed into the meadow I heard what sounded like big bugles that morning and at about 530pm I saw a couple of cows come out of the trees. And then this beautiful 6×6 bull comes out of the trees chasing the cows! I settled my nerves a little bit and sat down against a log and when the bull got to about 160 yards I was able to put this big guy on the ground! Only thing i regret is not waiting for my dad to be there by my side! But he was there to help get this guy out. I then made it back to camp and then we make the trek back in to get some quick pictures! My mom(colleen) and wife (katie) also made the almost 1 mile hike packing a long my 2 year old Grayson and 10 month old porter in to get some good pictures! Wasn’t very east getting pictures with these 2 and limited daylight. But we got a few the real troopers were my mom and wife who then had to turn around and take turns carrying the two kids on their shoulders trying to get back before dark. As they got back to the truck help arrived to get this guy out. We got back to the trailer about 11pm but our help had another hour or so back home and work in the morning! Since I filled my tag on opening day we decided to spend a couple days fishing at otter creek and the fish did not disappoint either in 2 days we brought in over 30 rainbows and almost lost fishing poles at the same time these fish were aggressive. I was able to land this 5 lb rainbow after an about 10 minute fight watching this guy jump about 3 ft out of the water multiple times! Minutes later my dad landed another 5lb rainbow! We got to hear lots of elk and see some beautiful country and catch lots of fish. Grayson even got to play in the water while we fished! This is definitely a hunt and fishing trip we will cherish for a long long time.
Krystal harvested this nice bull elk on Thursday, October 3rd in Idaho. She drew one of the pristine early hunt tags that began October 1st. She was with her husband when they saw him and when the elk turned to give her an almost perfect shot she took it. A planned 4 day hunting trip turned into one day and they were back home by Friday afternoon to show their kids.

Story Time… Sean and I were carrying out the goat. it was probably close to 200 pounds of meat. We each carried about 100 pounds… We would walk for 15 minutes and then rest for 5 minutes. We had done this for about 7 miles on Sunday. With about 5 more miles to go, we ran into a couple of elk hunters on horses heading up the trail. They were friendly and asked where we had come from and about our hunt, we told them that we had seen an elk heard. We showed them on a map exactly where we had seen them. They guy was funny, he made fun of us for telling him about the elk before requiring that they carry out our goat. We laughed and got ready to keep hiking. The guy grabbed Sean and said, ‘No, I am serious, we will pack that goat out for you.’ They jumped off their horses took our packs and loaded them onto their horses. The horses carrying the meat now needed to be walked out. These nice guys hiked the 6 miles out and had their horses carry the load. While walking we swapped family stories and joked about politics. The owner, Dan, was very nice and refused to give me any information that would allow me to send him anything. I am trying to track him down through some friends in Logan. There are amazingly nice people in this world. I wanted them to have a successful elk hunt, I shared what I had seen. They told us that they wanted to train their horse to be around the smell of blood. But, I don’t think they realized the amazing mercy and that they were an answer to mine and Sean’s silent prayer for help.

My wife Lyndsey drew her limited entry bull elk hunt after 21 years of waiting. As a family we had a blast scouting and camping all summer preparing for her hunt, which paid off big time when she took this bull 30 min into the opening day! A true once and a life time hunt!
