I just had THE HUNT of my life! It started out to be a joke on my brother, Nick, but it ended up being a fabulous couple of days “hunting” for photos! Last year Nick drew out for a Once-In-A-Lifetime Bison Hunt on the Henry Mountains of Utah and he offered to take me hunting if I wanted to go on a hunt. We grew up in a “hunting family” but I was never a hunter myself and I think he wanted to try and convert me. I picked up a proclamation and read it to see if or what hunt I would want to consider. The hunt I considered was the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep but still didn’t think I could bring myself to actually shoot it. However, I was going to tease my brother into thinking he had convinced me to go. The day before the draw, I text my brother to tell him how excited I was in anticipation. He asked what I was so excited about and I led him on about drawing out for a Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep hunt. Then when I told him I was pulling his leg he was bummed, so we planned to go but made it a “photo” hunt instead. Nick has always been a big hunter, but hasn’t ever hunted for Deseret or Rocky Mountain Big Horn so he asked around to get some ideas as to where to go to find these sheep. We took 2 days and found quite the variety of animals to photo “shoot”; we got pictures of pronghorn, a nice buck, wild horses, donkeys and some Deseret Big Horn Sheep but our prize find was a Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep! While riding around those 2 days, my brother decided he just might have to put-in so he could go hunt sheep for real next year. I asked him which one and he said he wasn’t sure yet but said, “you know what that means though, don’t you?” I said, “yes, that means I have to go hunting with you.” Best “hunt” ever!

A core memory made hunting with my husband, Koy, this week! I’ve gone out hunting a few times with family, but this experience was the whole package. Early mornings and late nights, 14 miles of hiking, finding animals, and then getting one! I’ve never been when an animal’s been shot and it was such a cool experience! This guy in particular gave us quite a story to tell! We heard him early on in the morning and had him bugling back and forth with us. We were on one side of the canyon and he was on the other, so we decided to hike down and see if we could get closer and get an eye on him. We bugled and chirped the whole way down and he returned our calls the whole time. About 200 yards from the bottom we heard him start to move down towards us. He was about 600 yards up the other side and we got him to come ALL the way down. We inched down to the very bottom and had to freeze because we finally saw him. He came in calling and wracking his antlers through the trees. He came within 30 yards of us before he finally saw us! Koy really didn’t have time to get situated, but he stayed composed and shot his muzzle loader free standing! Our adrenaline was pumping like crazy but Koy got him! I never grew up hunting, but having this experience with Koy showed me how incredible it can be! I’ve definitely gained a new reverence for nature and learned about the hard work and respect that hunting requires. I’m so grateful Koy let me tag along for his hunt and share the memory of getting his first Bull Elk together! You can’t beat this first time story!

Black fawn with its twin and mother in southern utah.
Julie lived in Alaska for 36 years. She has hooked and landed all species of salmon and huge rainbow on a fly rod. Since moving to Utah she had never hooked a tiger trout. She said she would only do so on a “the fly.” She got her wish and then some! She had a 5 for 12 day! It took her a while to figure out how to keep these feisty fish buttoned up in order to land them. She now understands the lure of the tiger trout.
